The Daily Beast observes that Jimmy Kimmel is no Anderson Cooper or Oprah Winfrey, and that his late night show is not the best place to discuss controversy. Even so, no one would guess that Ellen DeGeneres was involved in a very public workplace scandal this past year when she appeared on Kimmel's ABC show on Tuesday.

"Hardly the toughest interviewer in the mediasphere, Kimmel was especially soft on DeGeneres, who is attempting some image rehab ahead of the premiere of her new HBO Max furniture show, 'Ellen's Next Great Designer.' They joked about smoking 'wacky-tobacky' and even played a quick round of 'Who's High?' with pedestrians on Hollywood Boulevard," wrote the Daily Beast.

There was no mention of the issues that plagued the hugely successful daily chat show host, which include accusations of her remote behavior with staff, a toxic workplace culture that led to producers being canned - for which DeGeneres publicly apologized - and her show's subsequent ratings plunge.

Her appearance, the Daily Beast writes, "raises the question of whether DeGeneres only agreed to the appearance under the condition that her scandal would be ignored — or if she just knew it would be."

Instead, DeGeneres made news with a wacky Ellen story (suitable for 4.20) about how she drove her wife Portia Di Rossi to the hospital when she woke up sick in the middle of night after turning in early. The HuffPost reported that earlier that evening DeGeneres had drunk three "weed drinks" that had been recommended her by Chelsea Handler, which she supplemented with two Melatonin pills. But when she climbed into bed, she realized Di Rossi wasn't there.

"I said, 'Are you OK? Baby, are you OK?' " DeGeneres explained to Kimmel "She's moaning. I get out of bed and she's on the ground on all fours. I said, 'You're not OK.' She goes, 'I'm OK.' I said, 'No, unless you're playing Twister by yourself, you're not OK.' So I rushed her to the emergency room."

Kimmel questioned her ability to drive given her drug intake, to which DeGeneres answered that her adrenaline had kicked in. "I had to rush her there. So, it's probably not safe. I shouldn't be saying any of this," she said, prompting a laugh from Kimmel. De Rossi needed her appendix removed and was OK afterward.

ET reports: "Noting that de Rossi is 'much better now,' DeGeneres joked that her wife was in so much pain at the time that she resorted to using 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' as a bargaining chip.

"She was begging for more pain pills because she was still in pain and the nurse was not giving them to her," she shared. "So she starts offering up tickets to my show. She's, like, bargaining, 'What about the Christmas 12 Days show?' " she told Kimmel.
