SAN FRANCISCO -- Dozens of gay couples have lined up outside City Hall in San Francisco as clerks have resumed issuing same-sex marriage licenses one day after a federal appeals court cleared the way for the state of California to immediately lift a 4-year freeze.

Long lines stretched down the lobby Saturday as city officials decided to hold weekend hours and let couples tie the knot as the city celebrates its annual Pride weekend.

On Friday, the two lead plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case Sandy Stier and Kris Perry of Berkeley, became the couple first to marry in San Francisco.

The two other plantiffs, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarillo, were married in Los Angeles.
