Teen Vine Superstar Comes Under Fire for Anti-Gay Vid
Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 4 MIN.
You may not know who Nash Grier is, but 8.7 million people follow him on the social media video app Vine, which allows users to post six-second looped clips.
The sixteen-year-old social media maven, who also has 2.71 million followers on Twitter, more than 5.74 million on Instagram, and more than 3 million subscribers on YouTube, came under fire this week for posting an anti-gay Vine clip where he used the word "fag."
Grier, who has more Vine followers than just about anyone -- even beating out celebrities like Justin Bieber (he has only 1.6 million) and Harry Styles (he has just 2.7 million), posted a Vine he probably thought was hilarious, but in reality, is really, really offensive. The clip, now taken down, shows what appears to be a PSA about HIV testing with men saying, "Testing for HIV is not a gay thing." The clip then cuts to the Internet celebrity who yells, "YES IT IS! FAG!"
Out YouTube personality Tyler Oakley reposted the clip over the weekend, which appears to be uploaded to another Vine account, to his 2.6 million Twitter followers with the following comments:
"Promoting a false stereotype that HIV only affects gays to his millions of teen fans is extremely dangerous." He added: "Call me and people like me, 'fag' all you want, but spreading false information about deadly diseases is next level."
Grier has yet to respond to the Vine clip but instead, went on to promote his latest YouTube video. As of this writing, the video, which was posted about 16-hours ago, has more than 780,000 views.
Still, several Twitter users have called out Grier, condemning his anti-gay Vine and urging people to unfollow the teen, Gay Star News reports.
"NASH GRIER IS A BELLEND AND SCUM OF THE EARTH. HE SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS and i'm so glad that some youtubers don't tolerate him"
"At this point, supporting Nash Grier and supporting the gay community are mutually exclusive. You CAN call out your idol's behaviour."
"Nash Grier isn't sorry for offending people who are gay, he's just sorry that it's affecting his public appearance."
"I just saw your pathetic homophobic vine video and I hope your mother confiscates your iPhone and locks you in a basement."
"Are Nash Grier's eyes the only reason people like him? Because his personality can't be the thing drawing in that many fans."
This isn't the first time Grier has been blasted for his anti-gay views and comments. There is even a Twitter account called @NashHatesGays. The account's avatar is a screen shot Grier allegedly made in 2012, that says, "Gay rights? Nahhh"
According to the account, he allegedly made another tweet that reads: "WARNING: RT this if you're against gay marriage." The tweet had 209 retweets and 261 favorites.
There's even a I-hate-Nash-Grier tag on Tumblr, which details a bunch of the controversial comments the photogenic teen has made since his rise to e-stardom. You you can view that tag here.
In the wake of Grier's latest anti-gay remark, a Change.org petition has been created to have the teen publicly apologize for using gay slurs and "recant your false statement regarding HIV."
In other Vine news, gay porn star Bryan Silva became a Vine meme earlier this year for his bizarre clips where he shoots a fake gun and makes terrible raps. You can read more about him here.
