Despicable Me 3

The inevitable has happened to the film franchise featuring those dastardly mischievous Minions: It's suffering from oversaturation. That condition occurs around the third or fourth film in a series where the story gets stretched quite thin, and it happens in "Despicable Me 3." The kiddies and families certainly don't mind, as this third film has the distinction of being the 3rd grossest film of 2017 with its worldwide box office gross.

The good news for fans: "Despicable Me 3" really shines on Blu-ray, and its vivid animation really pops out. Back for more adventures this time are Gru, again voiced by Steve Carell, who does double duty as Gru's long-lost twin brother. Gru gets fired from the Anti-Villain League and almost gets coerced into being a bad guy again by his persuasive sibling.

Meanwhile, former 1980s TV child star Balthazar Bratt starts terrorizing the world (using scenarios from his long-ago canceled TV show) and it's up to Gru and the Minions to stop his evil ways. The Minions are sorely underused this go around, but the plot featuring Bratt livens things up a bit. That animated villain will generate some laughs as he moonwalks and dances to various '80s songs on the soundtrack.

For the fans of "Despicable Me 3," a purchase of Universal's Blu-ray will be a given. Along with the movie comes an array of bonus features. Among them are one deleted scene, "Minion Moments," and "Character Profiles." Most notable of all the extras is "The Secret Life of Kyle," a mini-movie featuring the Minions which seems to be the norm of all of the "Despicable Me" Blu-rays. As the phrase goes, don't fix it if it isn't broke.
