Poll: Voters Find Trump Meaner than the Grinch and Scrooge
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Good news and bad news for President Trump.
The good news came from a poll released this week by Public Policy Polling (PPP) that found Trump may be winning the so-called "War on Christmas." But that's only because nobody cares.
The bad news is that the majority of those same voters polled found him meaner than both the Grinch and Scrooge.
"You're hearing 'Merry Christmas' again," President Trump proudly told the crowd at the anti-LGBTQ hate group sponsored Values Voter Summit in October. "You go to department stores and they'll say 'Happy New Year,' or they'll say other things and it'll be red, they'll have it painted. But they don't say - well guess what? We're saying Merry Christmas again."
But according to PPP's annual holiday poll, Trump was speaking in an echo chamber. The results found that Trump voters are the only people who get offended with hearing "Happy Holiday" over "Merry Christmas" - and that number is small.
From PPP:
PPP's annual holidays poll finds that it's really only Trump voters who get offended about the 'Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays' debate. 23% of Trump voters say they're offended by the phrase 'Happy Holidays,' while only 3% of Clinton voters say they're offended by the phrase 'Merry Christmas.' In fact, there are slightly more Trump voters- 6%- who say they're offended by 'Merry Christmas.' Overall just 13% of voters are offended by 'Happy Holidays', and just 4% are offended by 'Merry Christmas,' suggesting this issue perhaps gets a little bit more attention than it deserves.
"All this data suggests that Trump voters are the real snowflakes on the ultra-important holiday nomenclature issues," said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling.
For all of Trump's self-purported love of Christmas, he doesn't poll well when it comes to Christmas-related issues this year. Only 30% of voters think he's on Santa's nice list, to 57% who believe he is on the naughty list. Voters were also asked who they think is meaner- Donald Trump or the Grinch, and Donald Trump or Scrooge. Voters think Trump is meaner than the Grinch by a 49/41 spread, and they think he's meaner than Scrooge by a 50/40 spread.
Finally, while most voters don't believe that Santa has a political affiliation, 27% believe he's a Democrat. Only 15% think Santa is a Republican.
